NETWORK ENGINEERING
A computer network (LAN or WAN) operates by connecting computers and the peripherals (like printers and scanners) using two pieces of equipment: switches and routers. The switches enable the devices in a local network to talk to each other, while the routers enable the devices to connect with external networks. A switch acts as a controller - it manages how various devices within a local network share information among themselves. The router acts as a dispatcher - it chooses the best route for sending and receiving information across a local and an external network or Internet. Routing and switching functions are all about planning and fixing routers and switches in a network.
Foundational Concepts: In this level, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of networking, including the OSI model, IP addressing, subnetting, and basic network protocols. They learn about different types of networks, network topologies, and the basics of data transmission. Hands-on labs might involve setting up simple networks and troubleshooting basic connectivity issues.
Intermediate Skills: At this stage, students dive deeper into network design and administration. They learn about routing and switching protocols, VLANs, network security practices, and Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms. They gain proficiency in configuring and managing network devices such as routers and switches. Practical exercises might include designing and implementing more complex network scenarios.
Advanced Specializations: In this advanced level, students can choose specializations based on their interests and career goals. Specializations might include areas like cybersecurity, wireless networking, cloud networking, or network automation. Students delve into advanced routing protocols, advanced security measures, virtualization technologies, and more. They work on real-world projects, such as securing a network against sophisticated attacks or designing a scalable cloud-based network infrastructure.
